Our community’s spirit and passion for sports is never-ending. It is shown through the support, volunteerism, and participation of all activities within the community. We acknowledge that our community members have a wide range of interests. The numerous facilities located around town, including the swimming pool, tennis court, golf course, track, football field, ball diamonds, various parks and more, allow the members of the community to participate in a wide range of physical activity. Each of these facilities is continuously being used by members of the town and surrounding area. With the help of volunteers and support of the community, the town has been able to form various organizations for Wynyard citizens. Some of the activities that are offered within Wynyard are dance, figure skating, minor, senior, and recreational hockey, golf, fastball, minor ball, slo-pitch, synchronized swimming, and an assortment of school sports. These activities provide our youth and adult population with an opportunity to become physically active, as well as develop stronger friendships within the community. The countless volunteers assist our teams and organizations with coaching, organizing games & tournaments, fundraising, and preparing & maintaining the recreational facilities. The time and effort our volunteers contribute toward our groups only strengthens community bonds. Along with showing appreciation for our volunteers, community members demonstrate endless pride for all of our athletes. During games or annual performances the local recreational facilities are filled with cheering fans showing support for our athletes. Also, to recognize the success of community members who have achieved provincial or national level competition, we hold an annual Provincial Recognition Supper. To develop successful athletes, individuals work hard and need to be supported by their community. Citizens of Wynyard and area support each of the athletes participating in the numerous physical activities within the community. From the various community activities that are offered, several individuals have succeeded in their sporting endeavours. These achievements show the youth that they too have the opportunity to succeed in their respected organizations. Individuals such as Richard Zemlak (Calgary Flames, NHL 1990-1991), Wade Skolney (Philadelphia Flyer, NHL 2005-2006), Brett Leffler (Regina Pats, WHL 2005-present), and Tayler Jordan (Portland Winterhawks, WHL 2006-present) are only a few of the names recognized within the community hockey arena for furthering their hockey careers; as well as, Brittany Straker (represented Saskatchewan in the 2006 National Starskate Championship) and the Wynyard Classics (Canadian Masters Precision Champions, 1987-1988) for their achievements in figure skating. Our arena also displays numerous plagues, trophies, and medals for the various other awards our local hockey teams and figure skaters have received. Our elementary school is continually developing the curling skills of its students. Delores Syrota and Sylvia Broad (Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Curling Provincial Champions, 2008) and Kyler Broad (World Junior Curling Championships, 2002-2003) are a few of the names the students refer to during these learning opportunities. Our school sports teams along with the Wynyard Stingray Synchronized Swimming Club (2004 Saskatchewan Summer Games Silver Medalists) have also received provincial medals. In 2004, the Wynyard School of Dance sent its senior tap class to Telemiracle to perform the Riverdance. The success of the mentioned individuals along with numerous others helps to motivate our youth and encourage them to become physically active. Our community values all the individuals that participate in the activities around Wynyard. The community of Wynyard has pride in the assortment of organizations that its citizens partake in; therefore, we seek to improve a variety of recreational facilities. We hope to make improvements to our golf course, ball diamonds, hockey arena, and provide some sports equipment for youth who are participating in activities but do not have the ability to purchase their own equipment. The improvements to these recreational facilities provide our local athletes with better conditions to participate in the sports our community has grown to love. These improved conditions create a pleasant, safe environment for both the participants and fans. The community refresh will have a positive impact on our current and future members of the Town of Wynyard.
