TSN Kraft Sponsorship Consideration Elk Lake (Township of James) has a population of just over 400 people. Elk Lake is approximately 90 Kilometres from the closest town with recreational opportunities available. Currently some children must travel out of town in order to participate in recreational sports programs. In addition, they are also required pay a user fee. The Recreation Committee respectfully requests that the TSN Kraft Sponsorship program consider Elk Lake (Township of James) for their sponsorship program with a grant of $25,000 to help upgrade the baseball park. This would provide an opportunity for the local children to remain in Elk Lake to enjoy the use of the recreational facitilies. Elk Lake currently has 2 ball fields. A fence is required on one of the fields to control stray balls and ensure the safety of spectators. Two sets of bleachers are needed for each ball field to replace the old ones. A new announcer’s booth at field #1 must replace the dilapidated one currently in use. The announcer’s booth is the ‘hub’ of the activities at the ball park. At a later date, the Recreation Committee would like to erect a pavalion adjacent to the ball park. The pavillion would provide shelter from inclement weather to both participants and spectators. In addition, the Committee would like to have lights installed in one ball field. This would enable some ‘night’ games and additional activities. Every Civic Holiday Weekend, Elk Lake (Township of James) hosts a slo-pitch and fastball tournament. Elk Lake is one of the few towns left in Northern Ontario that host fastball tournaments. Teams from as far away as Ottawa, Parry Sound and Sudbury, along with local teams participate in the fastball tournment. By improving/upgrading this essential part of the Township’s infrastrucure, additional recreational programs can be developed to increase the physical activities of local children and adults alike. This year Elk Lake is celebrating 100 years and we expect our population to double possibly triple. The Ball Grounds will be where a majority of the events will take place during our celebration from July 31st – August 3rd/09. The first Mayor of Elk Lake, Jack Munroe, challenged the World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion, James Jeffries in a match in August of 1904. Many young people from Elk Lake went on to play organized minor hockey in New Liskeard, Ontario. Elk Lake is a community who depends solely on their volunteers and committees. Elk Lake has organized many events that have been successful such as the Elk Lake Firemen’s Pike Bonanza, snowmobile rallies, Outdoor Ice Hockey Tournaments, Fastball & Slo-Pitch Tournaments, etc.. In the summer there is hockey and summer includes kids baseball, soccer, beach volleyball, all again coached by volunteers. Honourable mentions - Elk Lake hosted their first ever Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life in 2007 raising almost $93,000 towards the fight against cancer, also raising the most money in the Timmins Unit. Many volunteers were involved in this and was also up at the Ball Grounds were a track was installed for the walkers all donated by local companies and volunteers. Thank you for your consideration!!

I grew up in Elk Lake and the ball grounds is where we spent most of our summer nights...whether it be an out of town team challenging our local team or just a bunch of kids playing "21"..it was and will continue to be the centre of activity in Elk lake...and with the centennial celebration this year...a little "pick me up" of the fields will be something else the returning people of Elk Lake can take away with them..I sure hope it is considered a choice for improvement by you...thanks...
