Stade Paul-Émile Dubé de Trois-Pistoles

Although the hay days of baseball seem to be long gone in Canada, there is one place where this sport is still king and gets the entire community hopping. For generations, baseball has been a tradition with the 3,500 inhabitants of this dynamic village that lies along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. From the first rays of sun in the spring to the cold autumn evenings, boys and girls, young and old alike, everyone gathers at the Stade Paul-Émile Dubé in Trois-Pistoles to give free reign to their passion. For almost 100 years, the Pistolois’ devotion to baseball has made the Stade Paul-Émile Dubé a mythic site in Quebec baseball. Its unique wooden structure, the proximity of the stands and the friendly atmosphere that reigns there make each game an authentic human experience. The last decade was a glorious period for baseball in Trois-Pistoles. The proof? Very few communities of this size have managed to produce as many provincial champions in the minor ranks. Moreover, rare are those that enjoy the privilege of gathering close to one-third of their population, namely 1000 spectators, for a senior regional baseball match. Fans from the ages of 3 to 65 harmoniously share the municipal field where close to 200 baseball games are played each summer. Their pride in being part of the large Pistolois baseball family is undeniable. This success is a result of the quality of the minor and senior baseball organizations. The family spirit and harmony that reign within these organizations contribute to the development of baseball within the community. Fathers, mothers and entire families dedicate themselves heart and soul to give the young people an opportunity to experience their passion for the sport to the utmost. Physical education teachers are involved with the local teams so as to encourage young people to take part in the sport and develop healthy lifestyles. Moreover, three students work there each summer to train the children. Training sessions, fundraising campaigns and work to improve the facilities are only a few of the activities undertaken by the volunteers to support baseball in Trois-Pistoles. Unfortunately, we are forced to admit that the good will and hard work of the volunteers are not sufficient to provide a safe environment for those who use the Stade Paul-Émile Dubé. Victims of the economic reality in the regions, the baseball organizations realize that the City of Trois-Pistoles is doing everything possible to deal with the obvious needs of the baseball field but, unfortunately, this is not enough. The insufficient and out-dated lighting adds to the poor condition of the in-field, making it dangerous to play baseball. Improvements are essential so that the enthusiasm will continue for several generations. We are optimistically entering the Kraft Celebration Tour. The community’s enthusiasm does not have to be proven. All we need are the financial resources to support our youthful baseball fans.
