Kaslo, B.C., also known as the Jewel of the Kootenays, is home to May Days Logger Sports. Every Victoria Day long weekend, lumberjacks chop, saw and climb there way through Canadian Championship logging events. The show has been held in Kaslo for over 30 years and each year it just gets better and better. The Village of Kaslo has a population of a thousand and nearby communities add another thousand. It was settled in the late 1800’s by prospectors and fortune seekers on a quest for silver. Located on the west shore of Kootenay Lake and nestled between the Purcell and Selkirk mountain ranges, Kaslo has a beautiful backdrop for our Logger Sports show. The mountains, trails and waterways encourage an active lifestyle and hiking, biking, swimming, climbing, fishing, boating and skiing make up a big part of our lives. We have a hockey arena, soccer field and baseball diamond and teams compete year round. Logger Sports is completely put on by dedicated local volunteers who put in hundreds of hours organizing the show. A schedule of logging events such as the springboard chop, tree falling, obstacle pole, choker race and log rolling is prepared. Entry forms are sent out to over a hundred competitors across North America. Local businesses sponsor the various events in order to provide prize money. Area logging companies donate their machinery and equipment to prepare the grounds, the seating and the competition logs and wood. Forestry is the main industry in Kaslo, along with tourism and in these tough economic times Logger Sports gives the community a boost in morale as well as an opportunity to promote their businesses to the many visitors and tourists who converge on the town for May Days. Artisans showcase their crafts, food vendors feature organic and healthy food and musicians play their instruments in Vimy Park. Logger Sports is the biggest event of the weekend and has always been provided free of charge to all. Local groups such as the volunteer fire fighters and the curling club run the concessions at Logger Sports and use this opportunity to generate much needed funds for their causes and activities. The $25,000 would be used to develop and improve the Logger Sports grounds. We need permanent bleachers, an administration and storage trailer, and improved concession stands. The hundred foot tree climbing poles need to be replaced and a better log rolling pond is required. These improvements will also make this spectacular venue more multifunctional so that Kaslo can host musical events, outdoor theater and other local and visiting entertainment. The Logger Sports Committee feels our event is worthy of a TSN broadcast and hopes you will look upon our entry favourably.
