I would like to nominate the track at Williams Lake Secondary School in Williams Lake, BC for the Kraft Celebration Tour’s $25,000 Refresh. Community members, students at our school, and our athletes, use the 400-metre track at our school as they train for their individual sports, run for fitness, or just for recreational purposes. Unfortunately, our track is in very poor, and unsafe, condition. The track at WLSS is gravel, at best. It is filled with potholes, and is generally not safe for running on. Often we’ll find broken glass, and other dangerous, and /or questionable materials in the gravel. All in all, it is not in an acceptable condition, for our students, our athletes, or our community members. Our town has a long tradition of sports excellence. We celebrate our Annual Dave Jacobs 20 km relay every June, and an annual Nutrition Run. In our community, we have the Williams Lake Timberwolves’ Junior ‘A’ hockey club, the Williams Lake Rustlers, Men’s Third Division rugby club, various soccer leagues, and countless softball teams. In the summer, Williams Lake’s passion for sports and active living is demonstrated at the World Famous, Williams Lake Stampede and rodeo. Besides the hunting and finishing, there are the various water sports, such as rafting, kayaking and skiing. As well, there is all the area fishing derbies. Of course, Williams Lake has some of the most incredible mountain biking around. The track at Williams Lake Secondary regularly hosts the community’s Relay for Life event. In the past, we would host our district’s elementary track and field meet, but the track’s condition no longer allows this to be held. We just recently hosted the Girls’ High School Rugby Provincials in our city. Both high schools in our town have very strong rugby, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track and field programs, but not usable track. Williams Lake Secondary School has had the extreme pleasure of having both Carey Price, of the Montreal Canadians, and the Man in Motion, Rick Hansen, as past students. Apart from these famous athletes, we are very proud of the many rodeo athletes, who travel the continent to compete in their sport. We’ve had the pleasure of having 5 different members of our community represent our country in the sport of rugby; Leslie Cripps, Women’s National team; Matt Weingart, Men’s National team; Garrett Maddley, Men’s U-19 National Team; and Wes Black and Jake Ilnicki, the U-17 Men’s National team. An active, outdoor lifestyle is a huge part of the Williams Lake community. If we were chosen for one of the Kraft Community Refresh prizes, we would use the funds to make our track a safe place to be active, by paving our 400-metre track with asphalt. Although it would not be ideal, it would provide our school and town, with a safe running surface. Which would add immensely to both our school and community. Thank you very much for your consideration, and let’s hope that Williams Lake will be one of the ten deserving communities in our country. Yours in Sport, Morley Wilson
